“Unreal City”

For Sofia

o melhor poeta

In a bar in Shimokitazawa,

Nursing two highballs of Suntory,

And listening to Cole Porter on the stereo.

Your name’s Yasuke and you study law,

And we chat about nothing and everything,

While the limousine waits in the street.

You have your mother’s nose and your father’s money,

And I admire both from across the table,

As our feet briefly touch and I think I might die.

The bartender instructs us that it’s last call,

And I wait for you to do something, anything,

To break the anticipation, to break my heart.

You mention Baudrillard and I wonder

If any of this is even taking place,

Or if you’re just another stranger in the night.
